The rules that make this state different from the last one, what each breaks if you assume the national default, and how the engine resolves it.
Secretary of State, Comptroller, and Treasurer are nominated at June party conventions. A primary-driven candidate index misses the entire statewide slate — this year it would also have missed the sitting Secretary of State losing his own party's nomination.
Convention journals are ingested as nominating events with delegate counts, on the same footing as primary results.
Unigov consolidated city and county in 1970 — except for four excluded cities, the included towns, nine townships that never left, and every county row office, all still elected separately. The county's 'commissioners' are the assessor, auditor, and treasurer ex officio, and the consolidated city votes in odd years while its county offices vote in even ones.
City and county are separate entities sharing a council record. Each office carries its own electorate, cycle, and charter basis.
Indiana is the only state where township government operates statewide — city addresses included. Nothing like Ohio's withdrawal mechanism exists, so every voter stacks municipal, township, and county offices at once, and all 1,004 trustees and boards are on this November's ballot.
The township rung is mandatory in the resolver — never skipped, never merged into the municipal record.
SEA 287, effective July 2025, lets school board candidates declare a major party, run as independents, or stay nonpartisan — first applied this cycle. A nonpartisan assumption mislabels school contests across all 290 corporations.
Party is read per candidate from the filing, with the label's statutory basis attached. Nonpartisan remains only where declared.
Indiana still counts a single straight-party mark, but since 2016 it does not apply to multi-seat at-large races. County-council at-large undervotes are a feature of the ballot, not a tabulation error — and party column order itself varies county to county, set by each county's last Secretary of State vote.
Straight-ticket marks, the at-large carve-out, and per-county column order are modeled in the tabulation schema, so the anomalies arrive expected.
Every sheriff and assessor is up in 2026, but clerk, auditor, recorder, treasurer, coroner, and surveyor run on four-year cycles that differ from county to county. A statewide office-cycle table generates elections that do not exist.
Each county record carries its own cycle map, read from filings. The 2026 slate is assembled per county, never assumed.
Renamed by statute in 2023, but the constitution still says 'Auditor of State' — and the 92 county auditors keep the old title. Two office families, one word, one rename.
